History:
Arthurs Pass was established & the population grew due to be a place to rest for horse drawn coaches before the remaining journey over to the West Coast to the goldmines.
In 1923 the Otira Tunnel (8kms long) was finished, this tunnel was cut through the main divide and allowed the trains to flow between the East and West Coast. When you travel on the Tranz Alpine to Greymouth you will travel through this tunnel.
If you wish to travel over to Greymouth after your wedding you are most welcome to (additional costs apply).
The Tranz Alpine travels through Arthurs Pass twice a day:
Arthur’s Pass National Park offers a range of walks, from short easy strolls to demanding climbs. There are many to choose from - tracks lead you through rich forests, to waterfalls, alpine gardens, and mountain tops.
Tranz Alpine:
Rated 3rd top Rail journey in the World. In your wedding package we have included this famous journey as part of your Arthurs Pass Experience.
Timetable:
Depart Christchurch : 8.15am
Arrive Arthurs Pass: 10.40am
Depart Arthurs Pass: 3.57pm
Arrive Christchurch: 6.05pm
Weather:
Due to being situated in the Southern Alps the weather tends to change very frequently. The amount of native bush creates a cooler temperature with wetter and windier days compared to the coast.
The wettest period of time is during October / November (Spring) this is also known for the Nor-wester winds.
Summer is most settled. February – March.
During the winter when it’s at its coldest, it is likely to have snow falls. The majority of the snow will fall between the months June- September. However New Zealand is forever changing and it is possible to have snow on the ground in November. We have had snow on the mountains on Christmas Day before.
